Spotlight on Angela: Changing Lives at TROSA’s Thrift Store

Spotlight on Angela, TROSA graduate and manager of our TROSA Thrift Store in Winston-Salem!

Serving Our Campus and Community

Angela is changing lives and serving her community at TROSA’s Winston-Salem thrift store.

TROSA was founded in Durham, North Carolina, in 1994. We opened our Winston-Salem campus and thrift store in 2023 and have loved being a part of the Triad, NC community.

Angela can speak personally about how TROSA and its program structure and services have changed her life.

“March 15, 2012. I remember walking onto TROSA’s campus that day and thinking, ‘I am so ready,’” she shares.

Road to Recovery

Those were not easy steps to take.

For several years, Angela had been in a cycle of substance use disorder treatment and arrests.

“It was hell,” Angela shares. She had sought help at shorter-term programs, but needed something long-term. While at a detox facility, she was urged by a counselor to try TROSA.

At TROSA, Angela identified and addressed the issues and emotions driving her substance use disorder. Her determination, coupled with infectious enthusiasm, made a positive impression on all those around her.

After graduating from TROSA’s two-year program, Angela was asked to join the staff as Admissions Manager. An accomplished and compassionate leader, she has earned several professional credentials, including North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).

In 2023, Angela took on a new role, helping to open and manage TROSA’s thrift store in Winston-Salem.

TROSA Thrift Stores

TROSA’s community-supported thrift stores are part of our residents’ community assignments and are part of our award-winning nonprofit social enterprises. Our social enterprises provide a service to the greater community while playing an important therapeutic role in our long-term treatment program, helping our residents to learn and practice living life in recovery. Residents acquire and practice skills beyond traditional vocational training, such as teamwork, anger management, conflict resolution, leadership, communication, and more.

Our thrift stores–and all of our programmatic community assignments–help residents identify and address behaviors and goals to work on, and practice making these changes with peers and staff.

Learning and Growing

For her new role, Angela had to learn the ins and outs of managing the store, including floor planning and stocking. Angela is proud of her achievements at our Winston-Salem thrift store.

“Learning how each department within the store operates, managing a large team of residents, and creating a positive, supportive environment for the residents assigned to the thrift store have been my greatest and proudest achievements in this role. Also, having customers share their positive experiences about the store and our residents.”

Angela’s presence as our Thrift Store Manager is vitally important for our residents. Managing a 37,000 square foot store and caring for our residents in recovery is no small task, but Angela enjoys the challenge and the rewards of helping others.

“Taking on this new role allowed me to learn new skills while still contributing to the care and well-being of our residents, which gives me purpose. Residents see TROSA program staff in long-term recovery, and it gives them hope. I am proud of who I am today.

“Being a part of TROSA allows me the opportunity to help others navigate recovery. I believe in another’s ability to create a better life for themselves in recovery.”
