Program Overview

"Each One, Teach One..."

TROSA staff and residents have created an environment in which everyone is responsible and accountable to everyone else. TROSA community members share a set of core values that shape their relationships with each other and the larger community. Honesty, accountability, empathy, compassion, self-discipline, a strong work ethic, and most importantly, a true concern for others guide residents and staff members through the process of changing their lives. Through feedback from staff and other residents, each person is motivated to learn more productive behaviors and to develop high personal standards.

Honesty, accountability, emapthy, compassion, self-discipline...guide residents and staff members through the process of changing their lives.

The nature of our program is such that individuals are given more than sobriety - they are also given the tools they will need to maintain that sobriety and support themselves in the world outside of TROSA. Residents advance their education through GED classes or study at local colleges, improve their interpersonal skills through intensive group sessions, and learn how to re-enter the community.

TROSA's "Each One, Teach One" system helps residents learn important life skills and vocational skills. 100% of our graduates leave TROSA with a job in the community. Through our aftercare program, TROSA graduates are assisted with their job search and placement, with low-cost community housing renovated and owned by TROSA, with acquiring their first cars through TROSA's car donation program, with getting licenses, and with maintenance of their new, drug-free lives. Today, more than a third of TROSA graduates continue their involvement with the aftercare program, participating in bi-monthly support groups to ensure that they sustain their recoveries and successfully re-enter mainstream society.

The TROSA Formula Works

Hundreds of people have graduated from TROSA's program since 1994. For these individuals, even though they face a lifetime of recovery, their experience is fundamentally changed. Lives formerly characterized by personal pain and failure, by damaged relationships with friends and family, and by alienation from their communities, are now buoyed by a new sense of caring, and a new sense of hope and promise. Those who stay in the local area benefit from the goodwill that TROSA has generated and they are respected for their accomplishment by both neighbors and employers.

TROSA's Residents

TROSA serves a population with a history of chronic drug and alcohol abuse from a wide variety of racial, economic, and educational backgrounds. All TROSA residents share the common bond of their battle with addiction. Through the therapeutic process, barriers break down and residents look to one another for support regardless of their backgrounds.

Some information about TROSA's residents:

  • About 84% of the residents called North Carolina home upon entry
  • Over 70% of the residents are minorities
  • Women represent 18% of TROSA's population
  • The majority of residents are over 30 years old (our minimum age is 18 years old)
  • Nearly 50% of the residents left high school without graduating

Our program consists of two main phases - a Residency phase and a Transition phase. The Residency phase is the first 18 months of the program. After successful completion of this phase, the Transition phase covers the last six months of the program.
